Event Overview

The Canadian Youth Chess Championship is the premier chess tournament for Canada’s youth and attracts from across Canada the top boys and girls from the age groups of 8 to 18. The Championship is organized by volunteers to promote and encourage the knowledge, study and play of the game of chess. Subject to Chess Federation of Canada approval, the winners of the Canadian championship categories will form the Canadian Youth Team that will represent Canada at the 2007 World Youth Championship to be held in Antalya, Turkey, November 17-29, 2007.

Tournament Details

Eligibility

Entry to the CYCC is restricted to Canadian Citizens, or Landed Immigrants that have had 12 months of continuous residency immediately preceding the tournament. Participants must be members of The Chess Federation of Canada.

The tournament runs July 3rd-6th, 2007 in the Adams Room, Fairmont Chateau Laurier, 1 Rideau Street, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Sections are organized by participant's age as of January 1st, 2007

The organizers reserve the right to merge sections if numbers warrant.

Fairmont Chateau Laurier

The Fairmont Chateau Laurier is a great Ottawa landmark in the heart of the city's downtown. Within easy walking distance you will find Parliament Hill, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Byward Market district filled with shops and restaurants to suit all budgets. Ottawa's major shopping centre, the Rideau Centre, is a two-minute walk from the Chateau Laurier hotel. The hotel also boasts a relaxing pool and health club.

Thanks to Chief Organizer Neil Frarey, the top-notch, historic hotel offers a special rate for CYCC participants: $129 a night for a room with two double beds and maximum occupancy of four people. 30 rooms have been reserved for the CYCC and are available on a first-come first-serve basis. Discounted Parking

The Organizing Committee has arranged a reduced parking rate of $10 per day at the underground parking lot of the National Arts Centre, a two-minute walk from the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

The Byward Market

A stone's throw from the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, the Byward Market is a lively, flourishing sector of downtown that takes its name from the 180-year-old farmers' market at its core. You'll still find fresh fruits and vegetable stands lining the main street. Surrounding the market is a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood, filled with restaurants, cafes and all manner of stores.

Attractions

Every Canadian should visit Parliament Hill.

The National Gallery of Canada is down the street from the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.

The Canadian Museum of Nature, also downtown, is recently renovated and has a fantastic dinosaur and fossil gallery.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization is a short drive from the hotel. Inside it you will also find The Canadian Children's Museum.

The Canadian War Museum is also not far from the hotel.

Shopping

Next to the Fairmont Chateau Laurier is the Rideau Centre, a major shopping centre, and a Chapters bookstore complete with a Starbucks coffeeshop.

Celebrate Canada Day in Ottawa

On July 1, two days before the Canadian Youth Chess Championship begins, tens of thousands of people celebrate Canada Day in Ottawa in the vicinity of Parliament Hill and the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. The downtown is closed off to cars and the area becomes a day-long street party with family activities, street performances, concerts, picnics and fireworks. Ottawa is the place to be on July 1!
