Event Overview

The Canadian Open Chess Championship is the country's premier event for chessplayers to meet and compete. Sanctioned by the Chess Federation of Canada, the event is held in a different city each year. The Canadian Open generally attracts more than 200 players from beginners to world-class grandmasters. Recent winners have included:

Format and Prizes

The Open consists of one section with an estimated $20,000 prize fund based on 200 entries, class prizes. The tournament will be CFC-rated for all players, and FIDE-rated for those whose performance qualifies for FIDE rating.

Game/120 minutes with 30-second increments

 

Equipment

Sets and boards will be supplied. We also anticipate having 100 digital clocks for use. Players should also bring their equipment for casual play, blitz games and post-game analysis.

International Arbiter Jonathan Berry is the lead tournament director.

Participants must be members in good standing of the Chess Federation of Canada or purchase a limited CFC tournament membership.

Preference will be given according to ELO and to those players expressing serious interest as soon as possible. More chess in Central Canada in Summer 2007

The 2007 Quebec Open (Championnat ouvert du Quebec), a strong and well-attended sectional tournament, will be held in beautiful Montreal beginning July 20. Montreal is a two-hour drive from Ottawa.

 

For titled players, the very strong Montreal Invitational follows the Quebec Open. Last year's event was won by GM Pavel Elianov.
